The DOE Kindergarten admissions calendar for 2012-2013 school year is as follows:
January 9, 2012 – March 2, 2012 Kindergarten Application Period
March 19, 2012 – March 23, 2012 Families Notified About Assignment Offers
March 26, 2012 – April 20, 2012 Offer Acceptance Period
Admission to P.S. 163
P.S. 163 offers four separate educational programs: general education (English-only), general education dual-language immersion (Spanish-English), CTT (collaborative team teaching, English-only), and Gifted & Talented (G&T, English-only). We do not know how many kindergarten G&T and/or dual-language classrooms we will have in Sept. 2012.
G&T admissions
In order to be eligible for a G&T class in Sept. 2012, you must apply to the Department of Education to have your child tested. Placement in a G&T classroom is handled through the DOE. Please see our G&T Application page for more information.
Dual-Language and General Education admissions
Dual-language and monolingual classes: Gen Ed applications are available here and in the main office at P.S. 163. Please print out the application and bring to P.S. 163 during the hours of 9am-2:30pm. K Admission Form for 2012-12
Admissions Priorities
Zoned schools will give priority to students who live in that zone, as they have in the past. Schools will make assignments according to the following priorities, listed from highest to lowest:
1. Zoned students with a sibling who will be in grades 1-5 at the school in 2012-2013;
2. All other zoned students;
3. Students residing in the school’s district but outside the school’s zone, with a sibling who will be in grades 1-5 at the school in 2012-2013;
4. Students residing outside of the school’s district with a sibling who will be in grades 1-5 at the school in 2012-2013;
5. All other students residing in the school’s district but outside the school’s zone;
6. All other students.
CTT class: This program has 60% gen-ed students, 40% students with an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) and two full-time teachers. Special education placements are made through the Committee on Special Education. You are advised to submit an application at your zoned school and other schools for which your child is eligible.
Pre-K admissions
Admission applications for pre-K will become available on March 5.
Placement is made through the DOE’s Office of Early Childhood Education.
